A higher power-to-weight ratio generally means quicker acceleration, stronger overtaking performance, and a more responsive driving experience.
A power-to-weight ratio compares an engine's power with the vehicle's weight. Rather than looking only at horsepower, it shows how much power is available for every tonne of vehicle mass, making it one of the best indicators of real-world performance.
Because it accounts for vehicle weight, power-to-weight ratio is often a better comparison than engine power alone. A lighter vehicle with less horsepower can outperform a heavier vehicle with a more powerful engine.
The calculation is simple:
Power-to-weight = Engine Power Γ· Vehicle Weight (tonnes)
For example, a vehicle producing 400 HP and weighing 2,000 kg has a power-to-weight ratio of 200 HP per tonne.
Power-to-weight ratio is widely used when comparing sports cars, supercars, motorcycles and electric vehicles because it provides a realistic indication of acceleration potential. Generally, the higher the ratio, the quicker and more responsive the vehicle will feel.
